2003 is fast approaching, which also means that Coastal Communities Network's Annual General Meeting (AGM) is right around the corner. Please keep in mind the dates of April 4th, 5th & 6th and plan to attend our AGM! Our event will be held at Tatamagouche Centre, where we plan to offer exciting workshops, opportunities to network and a little fun! More information contact Karen Nash at karenanash@hotmail.com

2. Climate Change Workshop for NGOs

Clean Nova Scotia's Climate Change Centre is sponsoring a Climate Change Workshop for employees and volunteers with Environmental Non-Government Organizations and others concerned about climate change.

Where: Best Western Glengarry in Truro
When: Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Why: Because climate change could well be the most significant environmental issue of the 21st Century. This will be an exciting event where you'll have a chance to learn from presenters and each other. The workshop is free.

The deadline for registrations is Friday, December 6. Registration form is at the end of this material. Register as soon as possible since space is limited.

If you have information about your group or organization and want to share it, bring it along. There will be a table available to display brochures, reports, presentations or other information.

Directions: Take Highway 102 to Exit 13 in Truro. If you're coming from Halifax or other communities south of Truro, turn right at the exit and keep driving until you come to a "T" in the road and a set of lights (there's a gas station on one side and a Tim Horton's on the other). Turn left and keep driving until you see another set of lights. The Best Western Glengarry, 150 Willow Street, will be on your left. If you're arriving from Cape Breton or other communities north of Truro, still take Exit 13 off Highway 102, but turn left. The rest of the directions are the same.

3. Press Release

National Centre for Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Research Established
at Bedford Institute of Oceanography (PRESS RELEASE)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is establishing a research centre in Nova Scotia to co-ordinate the department's Canada-wide research into the environmental and oceanographic impact of offshore petroleum exploration, production and transportation.

"With Canadian oil and gas activities expanding off our coasts, issues are emerging that require new scientific knowledge," the Honourable Robert G. Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, said today in announcing creation of the Center for Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Research (COOGER).

"This national research center will help DFO scientists build on existing Canadian and international scientific knowledge and expertise," said Minister Thibault. "This will support DFO's role in recommending environmentally sound guidelines for oil and gas exploration and production in Canadian waters," he explained.

The centre will be located at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). Its first executive director will be Dr. Kenneth Lee, a scientist from BIO's marine environmental sciences division.

COOGER staff will work co-operatively with other government and non-government research agencies, both nationally and internationally.

For more information contact Dr. Kenneth Lee (902.426.3744) or Carl Meyers (902.426.9318) or visit the backgrounder explaining the mandate and goals of the centre at http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/media/newsrel/2002/hq-ac144_e.htm
