What is the Bay of Fundy?
The
Bay of Fundy, shared by New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is a beautiful
and unique area. Home to the highest tides in the world, it supports a
wide variety of activities such as fishing, ecotourism, whale watching,
research, and more. The rich marine waters provide livelihood for individuals
and communities, and the health of the Bay is vital to the Maritime way
of life. Sustainability and shared responsibility for the stewardship
of our marine resources is necessary for our way of life to continue for
generations to come.
The
Bay of Fundy ecosystem is truly one of a kind. We must not forget that
you and I, and even our communities, are an integral part of this ecosystem.
Our actions, and our inactions, influence its health on a daily basis.
There
is a profound love for the Bay that is felt in any coastal community you
visit. People are striving to make effective change to enhance the health
of the Bay of Fundy ecosystem. Changes are being initiated at the local
level, in the fishing boats, all levels of government, and even in the
classrooms. Communication and information exchange is crucial for our
activities and programs to work together for common goals, and our greater
understanding of the Bay of Fundy's unique ecosystem and our impact on
it.
On a
more scientific note, the Bay of Fundy is approximately 270 km (170 mi)
long and 50-80 km (30-50 mi) wide. It is where you will find the highest
tides in the world, anywhere from 12-15 metres (40-50 feet). And yes,
that is the vertical tidal range...
